Just My Cup of Tea: Crochet Tea Cup - Free Pattern

I love to crochet food - some for my daughter, and others I sell on my Etsy page (such as this tea cup) I've done a sandwich set (bread, cheese, lettuce, tomato), breakfast set (waffle, pancake, eggs, bacon), and a slice of pizza. I now want to try to make some desserts, snacks, and beverages. First up.... tea!

Below is a super easy pattern for a cup of tea with a teabag

Level: Beginner

Materials:

H/5.00 mm hook (use a bigger or smaller hook to change the size of the final product)

  • Approx 50 yards of worsted weight yarn in light blue (but you could use any color - this is great way to use up some scrap yarn)
  • Approx 10 yards of worsted weight yarn in tan or brown
  • Approx 1 yard of worsted weight yarn in white
  • polyfiber fill
  • tapestry needle (optional)
  • stitch marker (optional)

Final product is about 2.5 inches tall and 4.5 inches wide (including the handle).
You may sell your finished projects but please link back to my blog to give design credit.

Abbreviations:
ch - chain
sc - single crochet
blo - back loop only
sl st - slip stitch
inc - increase (do 2 sc in one st)

Note that you will work continuously in the round, I suggest using a stitch marker. Do not sl st and ch 1 between rounds, you will get a visible seam.

Tea cup:
Use light blue yarn
Round 1: Ch 2. In the second chain from your hook, do 6 sc  (6)
Round 2:  Inc in each stitch (12)
Round 3: [1 sc, inc] - repeat 6 times around (18)
Round 4: [2 sc, inc] - repeat 6 times around (24)
Round 5: [3 sc, inc] - repeat 6 times around (30)
Round 6: [4 sc, inc] - repeat 6 times around (36)
Round 7: sc all around BLO (36)
Round 8 - 15: sc all around (36)
Do additional rows if you want a taller tea cup.
Do not fasten off

Tea:
Use tan/brown yarn
Round 1: Ch 2. In the second chain from your hook, do 6 sc  (6)
Round 2:  Inc in each stitch (12)
Round 3: [1 sc, inc] - repeat 6 times around (18)
Round 4: [2 sc, inc] - repeat 6 times around (24)
Round 5: [3 sc, inc] - repeat 6 times around (30)
Round 6: [4 sc, inc] - repeat 6 times around (36)
sl st and fasten off

Tea bag:
Use white yarn
Row 1: Ch 5. In In the second chain from your hook, do 4 sc  (4)
Row 2-4: Ch 1, 4 sc (4)
Row 5: sl st all the way across
Fasten off and leave a long tail (about 4 in)
Weave your yarn through the top row to the middle of square so the string of the tea bag is in the middle of the square and not on the corner

Handle:
Row 1: Keep a few inches of yarn to sew on to the cup. Ch 3. In In the second chain from your hook, do 2 sc  (2)
Row 2 -16: Ch 1, 2 sc (2)
Fasten off and leave a few inches to sew on to the cup.

Assembly:

  • Pull the tail of the tea bag through the 'tea' and knot it in place (see picture below).
  • Attach the handle on to the tea cup by sewing it on the side opposite of the tea bag. I find it easier to sew this on before everything is stuffed.
  • Line up the tea to the edge of the cup and sc all around. Before closing it up completely, add in the polyfiber fill stuffing. Don't overstuff so that it will stand flat.
  • Fasten off and weave in any ends.
